Which path do you need? Choose first
Spotify, Apple Music, and other online providers are Content Services. Sonos does not copy their catalogs into your speakers; it stores authorization and requests content at playback time. A NAS belongs to Music Library. Sonos scans files and metadata in an SMB share and builds a local browse index. When an online service fails, investigate account, plan, and region. When NAS tracks are missing, investigate share protocol, credentials, path, and indexing. Treating both as the same “add music” problem wastes time.
If the system is new, verify stable playback in one room before adding content. A successful login does not prove the room’s network path is healthy. Use the first-time Sonos setup guide for the foundation, and check S1 vs S2 before connecting a NAS to older hardware because the SMB requirements differ.
Add Spotify, Apple Music, or another online service
Before adding a service
- Confirm the provider is available in the Sonos account’s region and the subscription tier supports the features you expect.
- Sign in to the provider’s own mobile app first and confirm the account and billing status.
- Open Sonos with an account that has permission to manage the system.
Open the Content Services list
In the current Sonos app, open the account menu, choose Content Services, open Connected Services, then select Add Content Service. Search or browse for the provider. A missing service is not automatically an app defect: Sonos notes that availability depends on region, the provider’s policy, and subscription type.
Complete provider authorization
Select the service, choose Add to Sonos, and follow the sign-in prompts. Authorization may complete in a web page, the provider’s app, or a device-code screen. Some Apple Music flows require its mobile app to be installed and signed in on iOS or Android. Spotify also supports direct control by selecting Sonos from the Spotify app. Never type a provider password into an unofficial dialog or share a device code with another person.
Name the account and test search
Sonos supports multiple accounts for the same service. If several people use Spotify or Apple Music, give each connection a recognizable display name such as “Sam Spotify” or “Family Apple Music” instead of leaving every entry as “My account.” First play from that service’s own browse area, then search for the same track in Sonos. This separates authorization testing from cross-service search testing.
What are the two ways to control Spotify?
Spotify can be browsed and searched inside Sonos, or controlled from the Spotify app by choosing a Sonos room through Spotify Connect. That second path is not AirPlay: Spotify hands the playback session to Sonos, which continues fetching the stream after the phone leaves the playback screen. Free and Premium behavior can differ. Treat the current Spotify and Sonos service pages as the authority for plan-specific limits rather than assuming an old feature matrix still applies.
If the Spotify app sees a room but Spotify cannot browse inside Sonos, reauthorize the content service before resetting hardware. If Sonos plays Spotify but Spotify Connect cannot see rooms, the stronger suspects are phone-side local discovery, a VPN, or the Spotify app session. Comparing the two control paths narrows the fault domain quickly.
Why does Apple Music depend on account region?
Apple Music is authorized as a separate Sonos content service. Merely having an Apple ID signed in on the iPhone does not guarantee the Sonos connection is active. Confirm the subscription, storefront region, and full-track playback in the Apple Music app before adding it to Sonos. With Family Sharing, each person should still know which Apple Music identity they authorized in Sonos. Library content, favorites, and personalized recommendations belong to that account, not to a particular speaker.
If Apple Music stops working after a password, subscription, or region change, use Sonos reauthorization first. Before removing and adding the service again, determine whether other household members rely on that connection. What looks like a harmless single-user login can be a shared household dependency.
Whose account should you connect in a shared home?
Decide whether a music identity belongs to one person or the household before connecting it. Personal recommendations, listening history, and explicit-content settings may follow the service account, while the rooms belong to the Sonos household. A guest should not leave a long-lived private login permanently in someone else’s home. The system owner should not rely on an email address that will disappear when a resident, employee, or tenant leaves. When several accounts for one provider are added, household members need to select the intended identity before playback.
When ownership changes or hardware is transferred, remove content services that are no longer authorized in Sonos, then revoke old-device sessions from the provider’s security page. Signing out of Spotify or Apple Music only on the phone may not invalidate the token already stored for Sonos. Access is truly ended only after both provider-side revocation and Sonos-side removal are complete.
Add a NAS or computer-shared music library
The current Sonos app expects an SMB 2 or SMB 3 share for a local music library. Sonos S1 depends on older SMB 1/CIFS, which is one reason legacy systems need a separate security decision. Do not enable SMB 1 across an entire NAS merely to make S1 browse music. If a legacy system must remain, isolate the share, restrict the account, and understand the protocol risk.
Create a least-privilege share
Create a dedicated music share and a read-only NAS account. Use a UNC path such as \\NAS-NAME\Music or \\192.168.1.20\Music. An IP path avoids unreliable name resolution, but reserve that address in DHCP so it does not move. The Sonos library account needs read access to music, not NAS administrator privileges.
Add the shared folder in Sonos
In the current mobile app, go to Settings → Music Library, choose Add Shared Folder, then enter the network path, username, and password. On desktop, use Manage → Music Library Settings. Sonos builds an index after the share is added. Large libraries need time; keep the computer or NAS awake and reachable during the scan.
Update the index and verify metadata
After adding or deleting files, run Scan for New Content. Desktop settings can also schedule a daily update. Sonos documents a music-library ceiling of about 65,000 tracks, although complex metadata can exhaust available memory earlier. Sample titles in multiple scripts, album art, disc numbers, and multi-artist albums. “The file plays” does not prove its tags are organized correctly.
Acceptance: do not stop at “connected”
- Online service: complete playback from its browse page, from global search, and after changing the target room.
- Spotify: verify both in-Sonos control and Spotify Connect, confirming the intended household and room.
- Apple Music: test a library item and a catalog item, confirming account identity, favorites, and recommendations.
- NAS: play a short and a long track, seek within one, restart the NAS, and play again after it returns.
- Multi-room: group the validated source into a second room and check synchronization and per-room volume.
Minimum-change rule: reauthorize one failed service, or repair one NAS share/tag problem. Do not factory-reset an entire Sonos system for a content-layer failure.
