Which of the two routes are you on?
- Spotify Connect — you tap the connect icon inside the Spotify app and pick a Sonos room. Control stays in the Spotify app.
- Spotify added as a service inside the Sonos app — you search and pick playlists in the Sonos app. Control stays there.
The test is one question: which app did you press play in? That is the route you are on. Both can exist at once, and only one of them may be broken.
Spotify Connect: Sonos isn't in the list
This is the most-searched version of the problem. Spotify Connect relies on device discovery across the same local network — not on your Spotify account. So the cause is almost always on the network side:
- Phone and speaker are on different subnets — usually the phone joined a guest network, or it is on 5 GHz while the speaker is on 2.4 GHz and the router isolates the two.
- A VPN is on — it intercepts local discovery traffic. Turning it off takes five seconds and rules this out.
- AP isolation or client isolation is enabled on the router — that setting exists specifically to stop devices on one network from seeing each other, which is exactly what Connect needs.
- An old Spotify app or old Sonos software — update both.
A quick check: if the Sonos app itself sees every room and plays fine but the Spotify app cannot see them, you have confirmed the speakers are healthy and the problem sits between your phone and the network.
Can't add Spotify inside the Sonos app
This route has nothing to do with the network — it is account authorisation. Adding the service sends you to Spotify to sign in and approve; failures usually come down to:
- An expired authorisation — the usual cause when it worked for a while and then stopped. Remove Spotify in the Sonos app and add it again.
- The wrong Spotify account is linked — switching accounts means removing the service and re-adding it, not editing the existing entry.
- The authorisation page won't load — it opens in a browser, and a proxy or content blocker on the phone can stop the sign-in page from loading.
Do I need Spotify Premium for Sonos?
A lot of people assume Premium is required. It is not — Sonos supports both Spotify Free and Premium, and a free account can search artists, albums and playlists inside the Sonos app.
There is one free-account limit that reads like a fault: six skips per hour. When the seventh skip does nothing, that is the cap, not a bug.
Spotify Lossless isn't kicking in — what's missing?
Spotify Lossless on Sonos goes up to 24-bit / 44.1 kHz FLAC, over both routes. But it has to be enabled twice, and most people only do it once:
- First, in the Spotify app — Profile icon → Settings & Privacy → Media Quality, then choose where lossless applies (Wi-Fi, cellular, downloads).
- Second, on the individual Sonos product — with a lossless track playing in the Spotify app, tap the connect icon at the bottom left, pick the Sonos room, tap the connect icon again, tap the
>beside the room name, then Change Quality.
Two hard requirements: Spotify Premium, and the iOS or Android Sonos app. The S1 controller and S1-only products do not support lossless at all, and there is no way around that.
Cutting out mid-playback
This symptom belongs to neither route above — it starts fine and can't sustain. The diagnostic question is: does it only happen with Spotify?
- Only Spotify drops while other services and radio are fine — usually authorisation or something on the service's side. Remove and re-add Spotify.
- Everything drops — this is not about Spotify, it is the network. Follow the Wi-Fi dropout trail instead of circling back here.
- Only Spotify Connect drops while playing from inside the Sonos app is fine — that points at the phone. Connect keeps your phone in the loop, so sleep, walking out of range or switching networks all break it.
The third one is worth remembering, because it explains a common misreading: "Sonos is unreliable" is often really "I walked away with my phone". If you want playback that does not depend on your phone, play from the service added inside the Sonos app rather than over Connect.
How do I change the Spotify account linked to Sonos?
Sonos does not let you swap the account on an existing Spotify entry — you remove it and add it again. That is why searching for how to change the Spotify account on Sonos turns up nothing useful: there is no change action, only remove and re-add.
Worth knowing: removing the service only breaks the authorisation. Your playlists and saved music live on Spotify's side, not on Sonos, so they are untouched. The cost of this step is low — don't hesitate over it when you suspect authorisation.

Search every music service at once
Apple Music, Spotify, NetEase and QQ Music share one search box in ZoneFoundry. Find a track and it goes straight to Sonos — no switching apps to cast it again.

ZoneFoundry uses the second route: the speaker fetches the stream itself, so the music survives you walking away, locking your phone, or running the battery flat — and Spotify sits in the same search box as your other services.
