Sonos Status Light Meanings: Every Colour and Flash Explained

That little light is the only way Sonos tells you what state the system is in. Start by separating solid from flashing — the same colour means completely different things depending on which it is. Everything is listed by colour below, with whether it needs action.

Last updated: 2026-08-26

White

  • Solid white — the product is powered up and functioning properly. This is the normal state; nothing to do.
  • Flashing white — powering on or connecting to Wi-Fi. Give it a minute or two. If it flashes for much longer without settling to solid, treat it as a network connection problem.
  • No light at all — either it has no power, or you turned the status light off in the Sonos app. These two get confused constantly: check the product's settings in the app for a disabled status light before you start chasing the power supply.

Green

  • Solid green — the product is muted. Not a fault. Unmute it in the app or on the device.
  • Flashing green — powered on and waiting to be set up. This is what you see on a brand-new product or one that has just been factory reset. Open the Sonos app and add the product.
  • Slowly flashing green — appears on disabled home theatre surrounds. If you disabled the surrounds earlier, this is expected.

Flashing green alarms people more than anything else on this list — most assume the speaker is broken when it is simply waiting to be set up. If you did not reset it and it suddenly went to flashing green, ask whether someone else did.

Orange

  • Solid orange — three possibilities depending on context: during setup it means setup did not complete; at other times it is a warning state and may indicate overheating; on a Sub it means the Sub is added but not bonded to a room.
  • Flashing orange — during setup it means it is establishing a connection; otherwise it usually indicates an empty playback queue.

If it is an overheat warning, do not simply power-cycle and move on — check whether the speaker sits in a closed cabinet, in direct sun, or against something warm. Move it somewhere ventilated first, then restart, or it will come back.

Flashing orange and white

This is an in-progress state, not a fault: the product is either updating its software or running a factory reset. Do not unplug while you see this. Cutting power mid-write is the one action that genuinely can leave a device unable to boot. Let it finish.

Red

  • Flashing red — a new or factory-reset product shows flashing red if it is not set up within 30 minutes. This is not a hardware fault; it means it waited too long. Open the app and set it up.
  • Flashing red and white — the product failed to update. This one needs attention; see the update guide below.

Blue (Bluetooth)

  • Flashing blue — in Bluetooth pairing mode.
  • Solid blue — connected to a Bluetooth device.

Only Bluetooth-capable models show blue at all. If your product has no Bluetooth, you will never see these two states.

Cycling through red, white, orange and green

The product has entered a hardware diagnostic mode. This is not a normal state and usually results from an accidental button combination. A power cycle typically clears it; if it persists after a restart, contact Sonos support rather than experimenting with more button combinations.

Three other lights that are not the status light

A lot of time gets lost reading the wrong light. Sonos products have more than one indicator, and they mean entirely different things:

  • Microphone light — solid white means the microphone is enabled; no light means it is disabled. Nothing to do with system status.
  • Battery light on portables (Move / Roam) — solid orange means charging, flashing orange means low battery, flashing red means a battery fault. Flashing orange here does not mean playback failed.
  • Amp's multiple indicators — orange means a fault was detected on the speaker outputs; green means one or more outputs are muted.

Sonos Ace headphones use a different set

The headphones use a separate table, so do not carry the speaker meanings across: solid white means powered on but not connected to Bluetooth; solid orange means plugged in and charging; flashing orange means the battery is below 10%; flashing orange and white means a software update; flashing red means an error state or a charging failure; flashing blue is pairing mode and solid blue is connected.

In one line: does it need action?

  • Nothing to do — solid white (normal), solid green (muted), solid blue (Bluetooth connected), slowly flashing green (surrounds disabled).
  • Wait, do not touch — flashing orange and white (updating or resetting), flashing white (booting or connecting).
  • Needs you, but not broken — flashing green (waiting for setup), flashing red (waited too long to be set up), flashing orange (empty queue).
  • Actually needs investigating — solid orange (setup failed / overheating / Sub not bonded), flashing red and white (update failed), cycling colours (diagnostic mode).

The two mistakes people make most

One: reading "no light" as "dead". The Sonos app can disable the status light per product, and plenty of people turn it off for a bedroom and forget. Check that setting in the app before you start on the power supply — ten seconds there can save you an hour.

Two: reading the wrong light. Flashing orange on a portable's battery light means low battery and has nothing to do with flashing orange on the status light (empty queue). Confirm which indicator you are looking at before matching it to the table above.

If your product shows something that does not match the table above, defer to Sonos' own LED reference — newer models occasionally add states, and that page is updated first.

Once the network is fixed, the daily part can get easier

Grouping, skipping tracks, adjusting volume — that is the part you actually repeat every day. ZoneFoundry is an iOS app that handles those in one sentence. It works with your existing Sonos; the Bridge is an optional upgrade, not a requirement.

Working then dropping repeatedly →

Once the light is back to solid white, ZoneFoundry can add cross-service search and multi-room control alongside the Sonos app. It changes nothing about your hardware setup and does not affect these indicators.
