Apple Music on Sonos: Fixing Disconnects, Errors and Missing Lossless

Unlike Spotify, Apple Music has no free tier — without an active subscription you cannot add it at all, which is the real cause behind a lot of "it won't add". As for lossless, the usual reason it never appears is one setting that has to be turned off first, and it isn't where you'd expect.

Why isn't lossless working? Turn Spatial Music off first

Apple Music on Sonos goes up to 24-bit / 192 kHz FLAC, but there is a prerequisite almost nobody knows about: Spatial Music has to be switched off for that room in the Sonos app before lossless will play. The two are mutually exclusive.

  • Step one, in the Sonos app — Settings → the room → Sound → turn Spatial Music off.
  • Step two, in the Apple Music app on iOS — Settings icon → Apps → Music → turn on Lossless Audio, then pick the streaming and download quality.

So this is a trade-off rather than a "turn both on" situation: keep Spatial Music on for Dolby Atmos spatial audio, or turn it off for hi-res lossless. Once that clicks, "why does enabling lossless change nothing" stops being a mystery.

As with Spotify, the S1 controller and S1-only products have no lossless at all, and you need the iOS or Android Sonos app.

Won't add, or "something went wrong"

Work down this list and you will usually land on it:

  • Is the subscription still active? There is no free tier, so an expired trial or a failed payment shows up on the Sonos side as "won't add" or as playback dying partway. Check the subscription on Apple's side first.
  • An expired authorisation — the usual cause when it worked and suddenly doesn't. Remove Apple Music in the Sonos app and add it back; your library and playlists on Apple's side are untouched.
  • The wrong Apple Account is signed in — easy to hit in a household with several. The authorisation page shows which one; read it before you approve.
  • Old Sonos software — when the service's interface changes, older versions report vague errors. Update first.

Repeated disconnects and stalls

The same test as the Spotify guide: try a different source. Play an internet radio station or something from your local library. If those drop too, this is not about Apple Music — it is the network. If only Apple Music drops, focus on the authorisation and subscription.

One case that gets missed: AirPlaying Apple Music to Sonos and playing Apple Music from inside the Sonos app are different routes. AirPlay keeps your iPhone in the loop, so sleep, walking away or a network switch all break it. If your dropouts only happen over AirPlay, playing from the service added inside the Sonos app usually ends them.

Which features genuinely aren't on Sonos?

These are not faults — Sonos states they are unsupported. Don't keep reinstalling and re-adding in search of them:

  • Smart Playlists — available only inside the Apple Music app.
  • Music videos — Sonos is an audio system and does not play them.
  • Artist posts from Connect — likewise app-only.

What you do get: the full Apple Music catalogue and your own library, daily-updated curated playlists, the Apple Music 1 / Hits / Country global livestreams, and search across the whole catalogue. Sonos also shows explicit badging so you can spot explicit tracks and albums.

Which of the three routes are you on?

Apple Music reaches Sonos three different ways, and they fail differently. Before troubleshooting, answer one question: where did you press play?

  • From inside the Sonos app — the speaker fetches the stream itself. The most robust route, unaffected by your phone, and the only one where lossless applies.
  • Over AirPlay — the audio is relayed through your iPhone, so sleep, distance or a network switch ends it.
  • By asking a voice assistant — what plays is decided by the assistant's own default music service, which may not match what you added in the Sonos app.

This is worth ten seconds because it decides where to look. For instance: if "Apple Music keeps dropping" only happens over AirPlay, investigating Sonos or Apple is wasted effort — the cause is your phone's state.

Dolby Atmos isn't playing — is that a bug?

The mirror image of lossless: spatial audio with Atmos requires Spatial Music to be on. If you turned it off to get lossless, Atmos goes with it — the two are the same switch seen from opposite sides.

Also, not every track has an Atmos mix and not every Sonos product renders spatial audio. "Some tracks do, some don't" is normal rather than something to troubleshoot.

One habit that saves time

For Apple Music problems, removing the service and adding it back costs very little — your library, playlists and saved music all live on Apple's side, and Sonos only holds an authorisation. So it doesn't need to be a last resort; try it early.

What genuinely belongs last is a factory reset of the speaker: it permanently deletes your My Sonos favourites and every connected service, and it does nothing for what is purely an Apple Music authorisation problem.

Search every music service at once

Apple Music, Spotify, NetEase and QQ Music share one search box in ZoneFoundry. Find a track and it goes straight to Sonos — no switching apps to cast it again.

ZoneFoundry uses the in-app route where the speaker fetches the stream itself, so it isn't subject to the AirPlay problem of ending when you walk away — and Apple Music search and playback sit in one box alongside your other services.
