Gate one: adding it. The service is not in the Sonos list at all, or adding it throws an error. Gate two: authorization. It gets added, but keeps asking you to sign in again, or shows as expired. Gate three: playback. Search finds tracks, but pressing play does nothing, skips instantly, or only produces sound in one room. Three gates, three unrelated causes — and picking the wrong one wastes a lot of time.

Travelling abroad with a home-registered Sonos account still shows you the home list. A service that simply is not in the list cannot be added no matter how many times you tap, and that is not a fault. Changing region means changing the Sonos account itself, which can affect services you have already linked, so think before you do it.

Only then can other tools that control Sonos make use of it. Signing into a music service inside a third-party app alone tells Sonos nothing.

Any of these will invalidate it, and the symptom is always the same — "I already added this, why is it asking again": you changed the service's password, you revoked authorized devices in that service's own account settings, your subscription lapsed or was downgraded, or the provider rotated its authorization scheme. The fix is the same in every case: remove the service in Sonos and add it again, completing the full authorization flow. Tapping "sign in again" is sometimes not enough, because the stale authorization record is still there.

With vague names, search results blend together and you cannot tell which account a track came from. Worse, when one of the authorizations expires you will not know which one to reconnect.

In the vast majority of cases it is a plan restriction. Free tiers generally do not permit playback on third-party devices like Sonos, while the search index still works — which is exactly why you can find a track and then have play fail silently or skip instantly. Single-stream plans fail differently: playback works, but only one stream at a time, so adding a second room to a group makes the audio fight between them or leaves the second room silent.

这是判断责任归属最快的一招。用内置电台、或者你自己的本地音乐库，在同一个房间播一次。如果换了音源就完全正常，那么 Sonos、网络、音箱全部没问题，问题百分之百在原来那个服务的套餐或授权上——继续重启路由器、重置音箱都是白费力气。反过来，如果换了音源也一样播不了，那才轮到去查网络和设备。這是判斷責任歸屬最快的一招。用內置電台、或者你自己的本地音樂庫，在同一個房間播一次。如果換了音源就完全正常，那麼 Sonos、網絡、喇叭全部沒問題，問題百分之百在原來那個服務的套餐或授權上——繼續重啟路由器、重設喇叭都是白費力氣。反過來，如果換了音源也一樣播不了，那才輪到去查網絡和裝置。This is the fastest way to assign blame. Play something from a built-in radio station or your own local library in the same room. If the alternative source works perfectly, then Sonos, your network and your speakers are all fine and the problem is entirely in the original service's plan or authorization — rebooting the router or resetting speakers is wasted effort. If the alternative source also fails, only then is it time to look at the network and the hardware.

That path bypasses Sonos' own playback and grouping machinery — while it is in use, the queue, groups and scenes in the Sonos app do not fully apply, and other rooms naturally do not follow. Nothing is broken; it is simply a different mechanism. If you want synchronised multi-room playback, start it from the Sonos side rather than pushing from the service's app.

Wording like "unable to play", "temporarily unavailable" or "please try again later" almost never admits that the real reason is an unsupported plan. Sign in on the service's own website, confirm the subscription is an active paid tier, and confirm no other device is holding the single stream. This step is worth more than anything you can do on the Sonos side.

The current Sonos platform uses SMB 2/3. Many NAS units now disable legacy SMB 1 by default for security, which is fine for the current system — but if your speakers are still on S1, S1 needs SMB 1, and the two have different requirements.

Use a dedicated read-only account rather than your NAS administrator account. Special characters in passwords are a frequent source of trouble — test with a simple password first just to prove the path works.

Newly added tracks do not appear on their own; you have to trigger a library update. Indexing is slow on very large collections and there is an upper limit, beyond which new tracks stop being indexed at all.
