The one-minute version
1. Capability, not model: what counts is the AUDIO_CLIP capability Sonos reports for each speaker. Every player running S2 software has it.
2. An unsupported speaker in the group: ZoneFoundry skips that one and plays on the rest. If none of them support it, nothing is sent and you're told why.
3. To announce in that older speaker's room: connect the ZoneFoundry bridge so it plays over your home network, or use a room that supports it.
This page is about broadcasts sent through the Sonos cloud after you sign in to your Sonos account (Sonos' developer docs call this audioClip).
① Which speaker is it, and is it an older S1-only model?
Sonos' developer docs are explicit: not every player supports cloud announcements (audioClip). A player that does lists the AUDIO_CLIP capability; send an announcement to one that doesn't and Sonos returns ERROR_NOT_CAPABLE. The same docs say every Sonos player running S2 software supports it.
The docs also warn: don't rely on model names — check the AUDIO_CLIP capability on each player, because new hardware and firmware updates can change support. ZoneFoundry goes by that capability too, so the model checks below only help you narrow things down.
- Check which app you use. Sonos describes the Sonos S1 Controller as a separate app for systems that contain its earliest products. If your rooms only show up in the S1 Controller, that system is S1.
- Check each speaker's model. In the Sonos app: Settings → General Settings → About Your System. In the S1 Controller: the Settings tab → System → About My System. Each product is listed with its model and room name.
- Compare with Sonos' compatibility list. The products Sonos lists as working only with the S1 Controller are: Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect:Amp (Gen 1), CR200, Play:5 (Gen 1), ZonePlayer 100, ZonePlayer 120, ZonePlayer 80, ZonePlayer 90 and ZonePlayer S5. Treat this list as a reference only; what Sonos reports for each speaker is what counts.
- Not sure which generation you have? Sonos suggests checking the System section of your Sonos account page.

② What happens when an older speaker is in the group?
ZoneFoundry checks each speaker in the group: the one that doesn't support it is skipped, and the others announce as usual. If none of them support it, ZoneFoundry doesn't send the request to Sonos and tells you why instead.
If the room you named doesn't support it but others in its group do, ZoneFoundry plays it in those other rooms and says where in its reply (see the next section). If Sonos gives no capability data for a speaker, ZoneFoundry tries anyway, so it won't silence a room that could have played.
Community report: an older Play:1 in the groupA Home Assistant user reported on 2026-09-12 (core issue #182047) that announcing on a Play:1 inside a group paused the whole group for about 3 seconds, even though that Play:1 reports AUDIO_CLIP support; doing the same on a Sonos One left the other speakers playing. This is a community report, not a statement from Sonos. If your group has a Play:1 and pauses briefly during an announcement, this may be the same thing.
③ What does ZoneFoundry's message mean?
The app and the assistant use one of these two replies to tell you what happened (with your own room names in place of Study and Living Room):
The first reply means the speaker has no AUDIO_CLIP capability in Sonos' cloud data, so the cloud can't reach it. It isn't a network drop or a passing glitch; retrying straight away gives the same result.
The second reply means the room you named can't play it, so the supported rooms in the same group played it for you.
With the ZoneFoundry bridge connected, the announcement goes from the bridge to the speaker over your home network instead. There's no special notice; the reply looks the same as usual.
④ How do I fix it?
- Use another room. Broadcast to a room whose speaker supports cloud announcements (every player running S2 software does).
- Connect the ZoneFoundry bridge. The bridge sends the announcement to the speaker over your home network. Local playback doesn't depend on AUDIO_CLIP, so older models play it too. For install and pairing, see Home Bridge: do you need it, how to install and pair it.
- For a longer-term fix. If your system still has S1-only products, read Sonos S1 vs S2 in 2026 before deciding whether to change anything.
⑤ Not this? Check these next
- Volume at 0, or muted. Check that speaker's volume and mute in the Sonos app first. In ZoneFoundry, broadcast volume is under Settings → News & Broadcasts → Broadcast & News Volume. More in Sonos says it's playing but there's no sound.
- Network. Signed-in broadcasts go through the cloud, so your phone needs internet and the speaker has to be online. If speakers come and go, see Speakers keep dropping off Wi-Fi.
- The room isn't in the list at all. See Sonos speakers not showing up.
- The music didn't come back afterwards. See Broadcast a message, then auto-restore the music.
FAQ
My speaker runs S2. Why is the announcement still silent?
Sonos says every player running S2 software supports cloud announcements, so the model is probably not the problem. Check that the speaker's volume isn't at 0, that it isn't muted, that it's online, and that your phone has internet.
Will one older speaker stop the whole group from hearing the announcement?
No. ZoneFoundry checks each speaker in the group, skips the one that doesn't support cloud announcements and plays on the rest. If none of them support it, ZoneFoundry doesn't send the request and tells you why.
Can an older speaker announce once the bridge is connected?
Yes. With the ZoneFoundry bridge connected, the announcement goes from the bridge to the speaker over your home network. That doesn't depend on AUDIO_CLIP, so older models play it too. The reply looks the same as usual; there's no special notice.

Broadcast one line to the whole home, then get your music back
ZoneFoundry is an iOS app that works with your existing Sonos. Broadcasts, music requests and scenes live in one app, and with the home bridge connected, older speakers can announce too.
