ZoneFoundry on iPhone Duo and iPad

Version 1.1 changes the layout rule from “which device are you” to “how wide is this screen”. Unfolded, folded and half-folded each get their own layout, and so do iPad portrait, landscape and sidebar — and switching between them no longer scrambles search drafts or the player panel.

Before you start

  • ZoneFoundry 1.1 or later. Older versions still run on a foldable, but the layout was written for iPhone sizes, so unfolding leaves a lot of empty space. Update via the App Store → search ZoneFoundry → Update.
  • Your Sonos speakers already connected (see the setup guide if not).

Why this needed its own release

iPhone screen widths barely changed for years, so a single hard-coded layout worked. A foldable is different: the same device is a narrow phone when closed, close to a small tablet when open, and can stop halfway. Judging by device model, all three states look like the same phone — which is why the unfolded screen used to leave a big empty column on the left.

1.1 decides from available width and size class instead: wide enough gets two columns, otherwise it falls back to one; if there's no room for the top panel it uses the mini player rather than forcing a bar over the content.

What you get in each posture

1

Closed, held upright (cover screen)

Same as a regular iPhone: one column, mini player. This is the narrowest case, and controls sit where one hand can reach them.

2

Closed, held sideways (cover screen)

Height is the constraint here, so the layout goes compact — tighter spacing so you're not looking at two lines of text per screen.

3

Unfolded, held upright (inner screen)

Still not wide enough for two columns, so it stays single-column — but instead of reserving an area for the top panel it uses the mini player, leaving the vertical space to content.

4

Unfolded, held sideways (inner screen)

This is the true two-column case: rooms and content on the right, Now Playing in the left column. The artwork scales with the column instead of sitting small in the top corner with blank space beneath it.

Half-folded, and the crease

Propped half-open on a table, the crease runs across the middle of the screen. ZoneFoundry reads where the crease is and which way it runs, and keeps buttons, list rows and playback controls off it — including when the crease is vertical.

Half-folded on a table, the lower half usually faces up and works well as a control surface. This release does not add a dedicated “tabletop mode” UI, but nothing gets cut by the crease any more.

What survives a posture change

A foldable hops between sizes constantly, and it gets annoying fast if the app throws state away each time. 1.1 fixes exactly that class of problem:

  • Search drafts: type half a query, close the phone, open it again — the half-query is still there.
  • Keyboard focus: after a posture change you won't be left with an open keyboard and no visible caret.
  • Player panel: the full-screen player re-lays-out to the new size instead of keeping the old one and showing a strip of background.

On iPad

The same width-driven rule runs on iPad: portrait stays single-column full width; landscape, or anything wide enough, gets a sidebar with a detail panel beside it. This shipped alongside the foldable work because it is the same underlying problem.

iPad can also host the extra-large Home Screen widget: the focus room's artwork and transport controls on the left, the whole-home room list on the right — stop another room without opening the app first.

FAQ

The unfolded screen is still single-column — is it not working?

Single-column is correct in portrait — the width is still under the two-column threshold. Turn it sideways and it switches to two columns.

Do I need to update first?

Yes. Before 1.1 the unfolded screen showed a lot of empty space and the player panel sat in the wrong place. Features still worked, but the layout was not designed for that size.

Can I use it half-folded as a tabletop clock or always-on panel?

No dedicated always-on tabletop mode in this release. Half-folded works normally and the crease is avoided, but the screen still follows your system auto-lock setting.

Do iPad and the foldable share one layout?

Yes. Both decide from available width and size class, so future screen ratios land in the nearest existing bucket without another device-specific pass.

Make the bigger screen count

Open it for two columns, close it for a one-handed remote — one app, not a separate build per screen.
